Part 1 of a recent 4 day road trip across France, Belgium and Holland / The Netherlands.
Stopped off at Bruges firstly to get some fuel for the van but mostly so i could say i was “in Bruges”, then onto Brussels to visit the Atomium Building, built for the 1958 expo world fair and originally was supposed to be a temporary 6 month installation it still stands strong after over 50 years, the Atomium its self it has nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times and is situated in Heysel park just across the road from the Heysel football stadium.
To give and idea on the size of this for those of you that are local reading this the Height of the Atomium is 102 meters which is the same height as the spinnaker tower viewing deck give or take a few cms, however the main difference is that the Atomium is also nearly the same width as it is high thus in size dwarfing the Spinnaker tower.
Other random specs:
The spheres have a diameter of 59.0 ft. (2 buses)
The diagonal tubes are 75.4 ft. long and of 10.8 ft. diameter
The escalators installed inside the tubes of the Atomium are amongst the longest in Europe. The largest is 114.8 ft. long. They can take 3,000 persons per hour.
The elevator speed – the highest in Europe – is 16.4 ft./sec. It takes visitors up to the top sphere in 23 seconds and its capacity if 22 persons.

Recently i haven’t posted much due to me thinking most of my pictures taken recently were poor quality, turns out my monitor had some freaky settings, i have gone over some recent shoots and will be pulling some stuff from the archives over next week or so, on a similar note. I have realised that while i set a high standard for my images which is a good thing there are loads of photos that never even get seen due to my critical eye. After browsing the net for reference images i realise some of my poor work is better than the average posted work by other amateurs, after all i am still an amateur so why not post the average stuff too I take the picture to show people after all.

On that point here is what i consider to be a not so great shot of Arundel castle in silhouette at sunset, I only stopped because I was just loving the red colour of the sun. The sky was very hazy and the castle looked blurred so went for the silhouette instead

After seeing them play twice at their home stadium at Candlestick park San Francisco, both game lost i really was hoping they would make it a third time lucky for me and I’m glad to say they did final score 16-24.

I havent had chance to look at all the photos yet but i saw this one and thought i would post it, if there are any good game images i will pop them up later as an addition to this post.

Today im going to contradict myself, while out walking yesterday, I decided that I don’t post nearly as many images as I should and mostly its because I’m too critical of my work and that I only want to show the good stuff, but maybe that’s not how it should be after all if I take a photo it must have been for a reason right? So I thought why not share some more…. and as and when I take a good shot every time I can start weeding out the rubbish afterall im not a professional photographer so im bound to take a few bad ones.

That said here is todays post taken a few weeks ago i just havent got round to it and it just so happens i think that this is one of my betters ones. Sunday evening after a long hot weekend I went down to Bosham harbour at high tide as the sun was setting I sat for about an hour and watch the sun disappear and then smiled as the sky turned a fabulous colour and here is the result…….

After many trips and nearly 2 years of trying I have finally ticked of another one of my sites, on a long list.
Below is a shot I took while messing around (in -6 temperatures), just for fun, the folly is lit by the full moon coming through the tree which was casting shadows onto the walls, giving that extra spooky feel.

Racton Folly:The tower was built around 1772 for the nearby 1,750 acre Stansted Estate, probably as a summer house although it is shown on maps as a monument. It consists of a two storey triangular structure with three corner towers attached, from this rises a large tapering central tower which has three floors to it, this originally had a conical roof. The central tower, as well as the three corner structures, were also castellated at one time, although this feature like all the interior floors, has now disappeared. Some say that its original purpose was as summer house however, an alternative possibility is that it was built by the then owner so that he could see his trading ships berth at Emsworth, then a major port. Either way, it perhaps qualifies today more as a curiosity than a folly.
