Part 1 of a recent 4 day road trip across France, Belgium and Holland / The Netherlands.
Stopped off at Bruges firstly to get some fuel for the van but mostly so i could say i was “in Bruges”, then onto Brussels to visit the Atomium Building, built for the 1958 expo world fair and originally was supposed to be a temporary 6 month installation it still stands strong after over 50 years, the Atomium its self it has nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times and is situated in Heysel park just across the road from the Heysel football stadium.
To give and idea on the size of this for those of you that are local reading this the Height of the Atomium is 102 meters which is the same height as the spinnaker tower viewing deck give or take a few cms, however the main difference is that the Atomium is also nearly the same width as it is high thus in size dwarfing the Spinnaker tower.
Other random specs:
The spheres have a diameter of 59.0 ft. (2 buses)
The diagonal tubes are 75.4 ft. long and of 10.8 ft. diameter
The escalators installed inside the tubes of the Atomium are amongst the longest in Europe. The largest is 114.8 ft. long. They can take 3,000 persons per hour.
The elevator speed – the highest in Europe – is 16.4 ft./sec. It takes visitors up to the top sphere in 23 seconds and its capacity if 22 persons.

My first ever Sunrise shoot, and for sure it didn’t go to plan at all, having stayed up all night at the trundle fog very nearly ruined everything sadly no shafts of sunlight hitting the statue but there’s always next time.
The trundle (St Roaches hill) An ancient iron age fort, is now a temporary home to something a little newer in Bronze.
Artemis a 30ft giant horses head cast in bronze Named by the creator/ sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green now stands tall overlooking the Sussex downs, glorious Goodwood, Chichester and a large section of the south coast.

Location

As you can see in the second picture the entire singleton, Charlton and east dean valley was thick in fog giving a surreal image of this giant horses head appearing to float on the clouds.
this will definitely be the first of many trips as i cant fit in before the statue disappears for good…….

Where is Artemis NOW?

update 1/9/2011 Artemis moved mid august 2011 down to to the lawn at goodwood house back in a semi public space visible to all <a onclick="window.open(this.href); return false" href=http://maps.google.com/?ll=50.872422,-0.73816&spn=0.001334,0.003205&t=h&z=19&vpsrc=6">click here to see location

UPDATE 8-11-2011

Artemis now has a new home in Austrailia, He left the lawn at goodwood house this morning and will arrive in austraia some time in december. the following information was taken from a bbc article clik the link for full article….
A family have paid about £1m to buy a huge sculpture of a horse’s head and transport it from Sussex to Australia.

The 30ft (9.1m) high bronze called Artemis was created by artist Nic Fiddian-Green. It formerly stood on the Trundle on the South Downs.

Now an Australian family are taking it to Sydney to become a memorial at the grave of their late father.

Mr Fiddian-Green said the family had bought his work before and had a love of horses.
‘Something this personal’

The sculpture, which was sited at Goodwood House over the summer for the racing festival, is being transported to Southampton Docks before heading to New South Wales.

The artist said: “It’s going on to one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world – known as The Great Dividing Range – on their family estate as a memorial to their late father.

“It’s an honour to have been selected and to have made something that will mark something this personal – its something very profound.”

I vividly remember standing on a raised bank by the river Lavant back in 1982 as a boy of 9 my mother standing next to me and the noise of this awesome amazing aircraft, i have waited 27 years to see this beauty in the sky above my head sadly my mum was not with me today but she was in my heart, and i will never forget the joy in her face jumping up and down in excitement when it flew over it gave me a shiver and a chill then as it did today, thank you to all at the vulcan to the sky trust that have made a cherished memory come to life again, long live the vulcan.

Shot from here (belated thanks to the land owner).

Some information about the Avro Vulcan and what makes it so special designed in 1947, measuring 97ft or 29.59 meters long (that’s 2 1/2 buses) with a wingspan of 99ft or 30.18 meters with a top speed of 627mph (just under mach 1) so successful was the technology involved in the design of these aircraft the engines were later scaled up to power Concorde.
All in all there were 136 Vulcan bombers built comprising of 2 prototypes 45 mk 1 and 89 mk 2 although only 16 remain in existence in museums there are 4 nose sections that were kept however XH558 is the ONLY fully working vulcan at this present time, and finally if you thought your car was high maintenance or not good miles per gallon this baby burns about £1000 of fuel every 20 mins.!!!! not for nipping to the shops.

I wonder if i will ever get to photograph the Vulcan and Red arrows in the same picture another 27 years perhaps?

Enjoy
Wayne

And Finally 1 last image
<img src="http://www.waynesphotos.co.uk/photos/architecture/gerkin.jpg" alt="st Marys axe "The Gerkin", London,waynes photos" width="200" height="300" />
30 St Mary Axe, also known as the Gherkin and the Swiss Re Building, is a skyscraper in London’s main financial district, the City of London. It is 180 metres (591 ft) tall, with 40 floors. Its construction symbolised the start of a new high-rise construction boom in London.
This building is visible from most places in London, however the closer you get the harder is to photograph, this shot even on my 10-22mm Lens i still couldn’t get the whole thing in shooting on 10mm is about as wide as it goes but when close up has some distortion effects on the subject hence in this image “The Gerkin” looks more like and egg than a tall building.

The Gerkin

This brings an end to a weeks for of Urban exploring or “Ubrbanexing / urb ex” or what ever you want to call it and I hope you have enjoyed this weeks images as much as I have

Wayne
