Dungeness Lighthouse Panorama
Todays post is an edited image from the archives earlier this year, using a program called Autostitch i have merged together a sequence of images shot from on top of the old lighthouse at dungeness.
The Old Lighthouse is 151 feet high (46m) and provides stunning views of the surrounding area, while the website claims to be a great family trip i would stress that although going up is nice it’s not some where you would visit unless you were in the area, we added it on to the end of a sounds mirrors trip, some of you maybe aware that i have a bit of a height fobia, i was less than half way up the first flight of stairs when i felt my stomach twirl, the inside of the lighthouse has 4 internal floors so there is plenty of opportunity to rest however the staircases are very open and you can see along way down, the penultimate flight was the worst. Upon arriving at the top there is one final flight which is more like a ladder but enclosed so was easy, at the top you enter into the lens housing which is pretty awesome and there is a tiny doorway about 2 1/2 ft square which you crawl through to get right out on top, now i managed that but when outside my legs refused to work so i couldn’t stand up, i must stress the balcony although perfectly safe is a little rusty, and appears to look like its going to fall off add this to exceptionally high winds 40+ mph (nearly time to change underwear), any how i made it out alive and intend to do it again when its not windy maybe one day i will conquer my fear.
From the top you can see the new lighthouse, cafe, nuclear power station and Dungeness Station, the final stop of the famous Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway re-opened after WWII in 1947 by Hollywood Stars Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The Railway runs a regular service through from Hythe for most of the year.
