Thunder & lightning over kefalonia

Had a nice relaxing cruise around the island of Zakynthos (Zante) today some nice pictures but not ready yet on the very tail end of the cruise a heavy thunder storm passed over head and was still circulating among the Ionian islands after dark so I went down to the beach and had my first ever attempt at photographing lightning. Due to the distance away it was hidden behind clouds in the distance, however a 3/4 moon nicely lit up the foreground making for quite a nice picture ….not my best ever by any means but good enough …..

This image is also found in the following galleries Seascapes, Nightscapes and also for sale in the shop

First sunrise of Artemis at Goodwood

My first ever Sunrise shoot, and for sure it didn’t go to plan at all, having stayed up all night at the trundle fog very nearly ruined everything sadly no shafts of sunlight hitting the statue but there’s always next time.
The trundle (St Roaches hill) An ancient iron age fort, is now a temporary home to something a little newer in Bronze.
Artemis a 30ft giant horses head cast in bronze Named by the creator/ sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green now stands tall overlooking the Sussex downs, glorious Goodwood, Chichester and a large section of the south coast.

As you can see in the second picture the entire singleton, Charlton and east dean valley was thick in fog giving a surreal image of this giant horses head appearing to float on the clouds.
this will definitely be the first of many trips as i cant fit in before the statue disappears for good…….

***********************************************************************
The horse has now moved from the trundle and its location is now the private members area at the racecourse see here ………. Location

update 16/12/2010 horse now back on trundle see location link above

Where has Artemis gone?

Where is Artemis NOW?

update 1/9/2011 Artemis moved mid august 2011 down to to the lawn at goodwood house back in a semi public space visible to all click here to see location

UPDATE 8-11-2011

Artemis now has a new home in Austrailia, He left the lawn at goodwood house this morning and will arrive in austraia some time in december. the following information was taken from a bbc article clik the link for full article….
A family have paid about £1m to buy a huge sculpture of a horse’s head and transport it from Sussex to Australia.

The 30ft (9.1m) high bronze called Artemis was created by artist Nic Fiddian-Green. It formerly stood on the Trundle on the South Downs.

Now an Australian family are taking it to Sydney to become a memorial at the grave of their late father.

Mr Fiddian-Green said the family had bought his work before and had a love of horses.
‘Something this personal’

The sculpture, which was sited at Goodwood House over the summer for the racing festival, is being transported to Southampton Docks before heading to New South Wales.

The artist said: “It’s going on to one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world – known as The Great Dividing Range – on their family estate as a memorial to their late father.

“It’s an honour to have been selected and to have made something that will mark something this personal – its something very profound.”

Bosham Harbour Sunset

Today im going to contradict myself, while out walking yesterday, I decided that I don’t post nearly as many images as I should and mostly its because I’m too critical of my work and that I only want to show the good stuff, but maybe that’s not how it should be after all if I take a photo it must have been for a reason right? So I thought why not share some more…. and as and when I take a good shot every time I can start weeding out the rubbish afterall im not a professional photographer so im bound to take a few bad ones.

That said here is todays post taken a few weeks ago i just havent got round to it and it just so happens i think that this is one of my betters ones. Sunday evening after a long hot weekend I went down to Bosham harbour at high tide as the sun was setting I sat for about an hour and watch the sun disappear and then smiled as the sky turned a fabulous colour and here is the result…….

Racton Ruins – monument – folly light painting

After many trips and nearly 2 years of trying I have finally ticked of another one of my sites, on a long list.
Below is a shot I took while messing around (in -6 temperatures), just for fun, the folly is lit by the full moon coming through the tree which was casting shadows onto the walls, giving that extra spooky feel.

Racton Folly:The tower was built around 1772 for the nearby 1,750 acre Stansted Estate, probably as a summer house although it is shown on maps as a monument. It consists of a two storey triangular structure with three corner towers attached, from this rises a large tapering central tower which has three floors to it, this originally had a conical roof. The central tower, as well as the three corner structures, were also castellated at one time, although this feature like all the interior floors, has now disappeared. Some say that its original purpose was as summer house however, an alternative possibility is that it was built by the then owner so that he could see his trading ships berth at Emsworth, then a major port. Either way, it perhaps qualifies today more as a curiosity than a folly.

Fontwell Racecourse Fireworks and Record Challenge

Halloween 31st October 2009 the night set for Fontwell Racecourse to attempt to break a world record for the highest number of guys to be on fire simultaneously in aid of the dreams come true charity . At the time of writing this blog i have been unable to find out if the record was achieved, as in order for me to take photographs of the fireworks the best view was not in the grandstand and i could not hear the commentary from where i was. If like me you enjoyed a free show from public ground roads, fields and footpaths nearby you can still donate to the charity via their website here Donate.

Taking photos of fireworks is something i haven’t really tried before and it was harder than i thought it might be so here is the best of what i managed to take.

Sloe Fair Northgate Car Park, Chichester

Sloe fair at the northgate Car park in Chichester is some thing of a local tradition in more ways than one in more recent times tradition is that it always rains, however real tradition is that the fair takes place every year on the 20th October every year unless the 20th is a sunday in which case its is on the 21st, the right to hold the fair was passed by King Henry I in the 12th century. He gave the Bishop of Chichester the right to hold a fair on land where a car park now stands and the event was named after an ancient tree which once stood in the area. Fairs have changed a lot over the years and these days Sloe fair Comprises mostly of large mechanical rides with a few traditional stalls dotted about. What ever the circumstances at least one stall or ride must be open on “Sloe Fair ” day else the rights to hold the fair will be lost, in recent history (world war II) the rights were kept by opening a candy floss stall. The fair is much annoyance to the Chichester district council as there is little they can do to develop the land or car park without restricting the operation of the fair, whilst also closing its 2nd biggest car park for up to 4 days per year.

I went out on Tuesday night in the rain to do a reshoot of a photo that i shot last year when i was just learning about night photography, the ride in question although present was not in a position that i could get the same shot or indeed a good one ,add this to the rain and i didn’t even get to take a shot so here is the shot that i took last year.

Enjoy
